JOHN
RUSHBY-SMITH
TALK/LECTURE
“THE CAVE OF HARMONY”
“The Cave of Harmony” was how Sir Thomas
Beecham referred to the sound control booth in recording studios. Aimed at
music clubs and societies, John Rushby-Smith’s fascinating talk covers his long
career at the ‘sharp end’ of music broadcasting and recording, both during his
thirty years at the BBC and also as a freelance record producer. It is lavishly
illustrated with examples of his work, including unique, historically
interesting material from broadcasts and recording sessions. There are many
personal anecdotes surrounding his associations with leading composers,
soloists and conductors. The talk lasts approximately two hours, including a
twenty-minute interval.
